Catholic April Fool’s Joke Taken To a New Level

Unam Sanctam Catholicam, a traditionalist Catholic blog, had not one, but two, elaborate April Fool’s Day Hoaxes.

The first: JOHN PAUL II’S BEATIFICATION POSTPONED INDEFINITELY
The second: RECTIFICARE ERRATA

NRO’s Kathyrn Jean Lopez admitted to getting duped by the first joke.  The second joke is a fake encyclical written by Pope Benedict condemning everything from Medjugorje, to Communion in the hand, to the popemobile.  It’s not until you’re about halfway through that it’s obvious how fake it is.

When I say that these pranks were elaborate, I mean that the first was made to look exactly like a real Zenit article (compare), while the second is a painstaking duplicate of a papal encyclical, down to the gaudy Vatican website (compare). I found both to be quite brilliant.
