The “3-2-1 Examen”: An Easy Way to Revolutionize Your Spiritual Life

Yesterday, I was on the local Catholic radio station here in Kansas City, and one of the topics that came up was growth in prayer, and in particular, the need for a nightly “examination of conscience” or “examen.” I shared the “3-2-1 Examen,” which I learned from a priest of Kansas City- St. Joseph, Fr. Andrew Mattingly. It’s simple, quick, easy, and if you’re faithful to it, will definitely change your life. I guarantee it.

A few listeners reached out afterwards to ask for it again, so here it is:

1. Turn to the Father and thank Him for at least 3 things from your day;

2. Turn to the Son, and ask forgiveness for at least 2 failings;

3. Turn to the Spirit, and make 1 concrete, measurable resolution for the next day.

Father Mattingly, who I got this from, adds that if you do this regularly (and ideally keep a journal!) it makes things like spiritual direction so much easier, because you will already know where you’re struggling and where you’re thriving. I think it also makes Confession a lot easier.

If you find this helpful, I’d encourage you to bookmark it, and to share it with your friends!
