Say Hello to “The Catholic Podcast”!

Today is the big day, and the podcast that Chloe Langr and I have been working on is finally launching today! Here’s what we’ve got for you:

  • A new website, https://www.cathpod.com/ : Cath Pod, like “Catholic Podcast,” eh? Eh?
    • Why the new name? Because the blog is a collaborative venture, we’re not flying it under the Shameless Popery flag, but I think you’ll find a lot of the kind of content you’d find here, just in a different format. Podcast episodes are about 45 minutes, which is good both for your morning commute and my verbosity.
  • Several ways to listen: we’re now live on iTunes / Apple Podcasts, and Google Play Music, or you can just listen through our website. The website’s “episode page” has descriptions of each episodes, and links to find out more about the topics that we discussed.
  • Three episodes, for your listening pleasure:
    • Episode 1, “The State of Things” — How bad are things for the Catholic Church in America today? Well, for every person who joins the Catholic Church, more than six people leave. So, worse than any other major denomination.  For our inaugural podcast, we decided to talk about why, and start a conversation about what can be done. After all, this podcast exists because we think the status quo isn’t working.
    • Episode 2, “Lent through the Eyes of Mary” — Since it’s Lent, we’re doing a series of episodes taking a look at important figures. We begin with the Virgin Mary. How did God prepare her for His (and her) Son’s Passion? How did she stay fast while the Apostles fled?
    • Episode 3, “Lent through the Eyes of Judas” — Sometimes, it helps to see what not to do. What can we learn from Judas Iscariot?
  • New episodes… soon! Specifically, every Monday. Subscribe on iTunes or in Google Play or whatever you use, and you should get them automatically.

So a little about our game-plan. We have a generic-sounding name on purpose, because we want to become one of the places that people turn who are just beginning to explore Catholicism… the kind of people who might just search “Catholic podcast,” because they don’t know where to turn. There are a lot of bad corners on the Internet with ugly distortions of Catholicism, and we want to offer them something better, truer, and more beautiful. Namely, we want to help people see the beauty of friendship with Jesus Christ, and the good of intentional friendships that lead others to Christ. So if you’re sold on that mission, what can you do to help?

  • Listen, of course!
  • Be patient! Please feel free to leave lots of feedback here (especially in the comments below this post), but understand that there’s a learning curve, and we’re (hopefully) getting better as we go along.
  • Check out our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/TheCatholicPodcast/ : Like and follow us on Facebook to get sneak previews. For example, we’ve posted our schedule for the first
  • Subscribe, and download episodes! Sites like iTunes look at how many new subscribers, and how many new downloads, a podcast gets over a particular span of time. So if you subscribe, and download the first few episodes, that simple action will make it a little more likely that The Catholic Podcast will pop up on the list of podcasts when someone searches “Catholic podcast.”
  • Help spread the word! Send the website or the FB page to your friends, or share particular episodes. It’s an easy way to evangelize.

  1. The first podcast that I opened happened to be number 3, on Judas and Peter; and there were multiple excellent points made by both Joe and Chloe, who both also make and excellent team for the purpose of spiritual discussion. It was a very profitable 43 minutes to spend, and I can see how it should be able to benefit very many people and especially if they can get accustomed to commuting with these podcasts on their way to and from work each day.

In many ways, it’s similar to various Relevant Radio broadcasts, but I think the discussion in this new podcast is a little more topically focused, personal and spiritually intense; and with an apologetic twist to add!

I’ll look forward to the future podcasts, and will try to spread them to whoever will listen to my recommendation.

Great Job, Chloe and Joe! Again, you make a great team!

  2. Great Work here, Joe and Chloe (rhymers!).

For those who don’t commute or who are visual learners, do you still intend to post under ShamelessPopery?

Best to you in this new endeavor!

    1. Hi Margo,

Joe references various past articles from Shameless Popery that he uses in the new podcasts. Clicking the links that he provides takes you right into the blog. So, I would doubt that he would neglect Shameless Popery as it has such a wealth of apologetics archived on it, and can generate ideas via new posts for the future podcasts as well.

      Best to you.

    2. Margo,

I certainly do intend to keep blogging. It’s a totally different medium, and I find that I present things pretty differently in writing vs. speaking, so hopefully doing both will help. In fact, I have a new post up. Enjoy!

      Joe

  3. Looking forward to checking this podcast out!

Seeing how it’s called “The Catholic Podcast” and not “The Roman Catholic Podcast”, it would be great to get some talk on the Eastern Catholic Churches (Churches, not just “rites”), and their theology, spirituality, history, etc…

  4. Joe: I need to talk with you or by e-mail. Want to discuss the case the “you cracked open” with your sleuthing years ago. We still regularly talk about it; now it is over as of March 9. (:>) . B

    1. Bill, great to hear from you! I was actually just singing your praises last night, believe it or not. I only have your old Polsinelli e-mail. Mine is [email protected], if you want to reach out to me. I’m excited to hear what happened with the case!

  5. Ask these Greek catholic Ukrainians ,what religion was brought to Kiev over 1,000 years ago? Answer : Orthodoxy. Catholicism was forced on the Galician Ukrainians by Poles and Austro-Hungarians. Forced is the word to remember. Their liturgy is identical to Orthodoxy, their priests are allowed to marry and expected to be married. Forcing Catholicism on Ukrainians is terrorism.

    1. Laura,

This comment is apropos of what?

I recognize Christians by the love they have for one another.

Thank you for your point of view.

    2. Laura,

This comment is both unrelated to anything we were talking about and outlandish historical nonsense. At the time Ukraine became Christian, they entered into a church whose earthly spiritual head with the Bishop of Rome. That’s an undeniable historical fact and ethnonationalist propaganda can’t change that.

  6. I’m lazy, is there some sort of app that automatically updates on my phone with the newest episodes? I am so busy that literally piecing together the time to click download is daunting.

  7. I can’t believe I haven’t followed you up until now. This is amazing.

Your breadth of knowledge on this is stunning. Thanks for taking the time to share it with all of us.

  8. I’ve enjoyed the ‘Lent through the eyes of…’ particularly the Marian episode.
My one concern is the sound mixing. I have to continually turn the sound up to hear Chloe and then down for Joe.
