Late-term abortionist George Tiller was gunned down in cold blood in church yesterday morning.
I’m not in a position to know which is more of an affront to God: the fact that George Tiller was serving as an usher at Reformation Lutheran (an ELCA church), despite his notorious practice of aborting children partially out of their mothers’ wombs; or the fact that someone who allegedly believes in the sanctity of human life, and believed themselves to be defending God’s creation, strolled into a church on a Sunday morning to commit murder.
I’m reminded of the end of The Life You Save May Be Your Own, where Shiflet (who has just abandoned his developmentally-stunted, deaf, newlywed wife at a diner) curses an ingrateful hitchhiker (who curses his mother) by saying, “Oh Lord! Break forth and wash this slime from the earth!”
The response by virtually everyone has been unpleasant. This tragedy has instantly become political fodder, and an ominous portent.
